Job Description Job Objective: The Clinical Nurse Specialistis an advanced practice nurse with master's or doctoral level preparation and expert knowledge in area of specialty. The CNS improves patient care using 3 spheres of influence: patients, nurses and nursing practice, and organizations and systems. The CNS is a clinical expert in evidence-based practice within a specialty area. The CNS influences outcomes bysupport of nurses in the delivery of high quality, safe, evidence-based care. TheCNS practices in accordance with American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development and Scope and Standards of his/her professional specialty. Major functions include: Provide expert, specialty consultation to patients, staff, and physicians. Collaborate with nursing and physicians on identifying and prioritizing nursing care needs for complex patients. Coordinate care of patients across settings through collaboration with applicable departments. Improve quality of nursing care by managing change and empowering others to influence clinical practice and political processes both within and across systems. Promote research through utilization of systematic inquiry in the interpretation, translation, and use of evidence to evaluate and improve clinical practice; participates in conduct of research. Providementoring and guidance to advance patient care and nursing practice. Identify, articulate, and take action on ethical concerns at all levels. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: A. Direct and Indirect Patient Care Provides direct patient care during staffing shortages or assisting with complex patients. Serves as expert resource and consultant on latest evidence supporting cost-effective, safe nursing practice. Serves as resource to nursing personnel in the care planning of complex or unusual patients. Conducts comprehensive assessments using evidence-based tools and techniques. Initiates and plans patient care conferences for complex patients. Designs and evaluates effective educational programs for patients and families. Identifies, collects, and analyzes data for program design and outcome measurement. Oversees implementation of a coordinated and effective discharge planning and parent education program for neonatal and pediatric patients. B. Nurses and Nursing Practice Collaborates with Service Line Executive Director, Managers, and Educators to identify priority trends, patterns, and opportunities to improve practice. Leads or facilitates system-wide initiatives and changes in practice. Collaborates with teams to identify and resolve issues related to patient care, policies and procedures, and resources. Develops and revises nursing policies and procedures, and protocols using available evidence to achieve improved outcomes for nurse sensitive indicators. Reviews and provides input on all policies related to the care of infants within the hospital. Identifies facilitators and addresses barriers that effect patient outcomes. Leads clinical practice and quality improvement activities for service line or program. Collaborates with nurses to develop practice environments that support effective communication and shared decision-making. Assists staff in development of critical thinking and clinical judgment. Promotes an environment that supports professional development and accountability. Collaborates with Education Specialists on content and design of orientation, competency, and education program development for specialty patient populations across settings. Mentors nurses to acquire new skills, pursue education and certification, and incorporate evidence into practice. Provides input into staff evaluations. Provides formal and informal education for nurses and other health care professionals. Leads in the conduct and utilization of research. C. Organization/System Leadership Collaborates with Quality Management and Infection Control on identification of trends/patterns and opportunities for improvement. Collaborates with Service Line Executive Director and Managers on identification of trends/patterns and opportunities to improve care. Consults with other units and health care professionals to improve care. Leads and supports groups to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes. Develops and evaluates programs or interventions that are consistent with organization's strategic plan, standards of practice, and regulatory requirements. Participates in product and equipment need identification, selection, and evaluation. Contributes to nursing knowledge through participation in professional organizations, presentations, posters and publications. Non-Essential Duties: Copying, faxing. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge Knowledge and experience of quality management principles. Knowledge of mathematical concepts and the application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Knowledge and ability to practice as defined by California Nurse Practice Act, ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and ANA Code of Ethics in coordination with hospital policy and procedure. Knowledge of Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development. Knowledge of Nursing Sensitive Indicators and demonstrated knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups. Knowledge of legal and regulatory aspects of care and patient rights. Knowledge and competency on hospital information systems. Skills Transferring concepts into practical application Reading, analyzing and interpreting common scientific and technical journals and understanding regulatory requirements. Unitization of nursing process and effective decision making when establishing plan of care. Time management skills in providing excellent patient care. Safe and effective usage of all equipment necessary to provide patient care. Current nursing practices and procedures and the development of a plan of care that support positive outcomes. Budget preparation and control as it relates to programmatic responsibility. Problem-solving, time management and organizational skills. Ability to prepare complete, clear reports and recommendations after appropriate analyses of relevant and reliable information. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Abilities Utilize evidence to develop, teach, and implement practice standards, policies, and procedures. Leadership, mentoring, collaboration abilities. Provide and coordinate educational programs. Assess and evaluate clinical performance of employees. Develop written documents such as orientation check lists, policies and procedures, and clinical competency tools. Instruct employees in care and operation of equipment pertinent to clinical area. Define problems by collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Give and support the highest level of customer satisfaction at all times by providing a high degree of interaction with patient's and family members utilizing compassion and fostering effective communication. Display a willingness to work as a team player. Communicate effectively while maintaining good working relationships with coworkers, managers and all other hospital staff. Follow direction and accept and utilize constructive criticism. Prioritize and maintain organization of work flow. Experience Required: Minimum of three (3) years continuous recent clinical experience and clinical knowledge in specialty area.Obtains and maintains relevant professional certification. Desired: Five (5) years experience in advanced practice nursing leadership. Required Licensure and/or Certifications: Current California Registered Nursing license Current CNS BRN certification Certification in area of specialty CNS Advanced Practice Certification (desired) BCLS required Unit specific specialty certification preferred (NRP) Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work occasionally performed under stressful, emotional, and physical conditions Accepts additional workload during times of unexpected circumstances, e.g., high activity, high census, and sudden emergencies May be exposed to contaminated Instruments that may cause Infections, burns, or cuts Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting and reaching, and must be able to speak, see, and hear. Ability to frequently lift, push and pull up to 25 lbs. Ability to occasionally assist, as part of team, in lifting, pushing and/or pulling patients for the transfer of care, requiring exertion of up to and over 50 lbs.
