The Watson Health - Medical Ethnographer will be a member of the research team in the Watson Health “Evaluation Research Center and will provide ethnographic observation, assessment and analytic services in the design and implementation of product evaluations and studies examining clinician and patient behaviors and experiences. This professional will support or lead in producing high quality manuscripts, abstracts and presentations that involve the Center's research.

The Medical Ethnographer will become an expert on the products, capabilities, data assets, and research activities of IBM Watson Health and work with the VP & Director of the WH Evaluation and Research Center and the Center's team to understand the evidence needs, research approaches, data requirements and sources, target publications and forums, and research partner arrangements, roles and responsibilities.
Additional Responsibility include:
Based on strategic goals and Center activities, formulate and execute the medical ethnographic evaluation components for relevant research studies, including:
Identification of key ethnographic insights required for the studies
Formulation of plans for appropriate ethnographic observations, methods and analyses required in studies
Performance of the medical ethnographic services
Produce the medical ethnography content for scientific manuscripts, other publications and presentations
Develop the essential research and client partnerships required to execute the research medical ethnography agenda, especially those studies to be carried out in naturalistic (real world) clinical settings.
Develop Product Insights :
Provide broad expertise to offering management and innovation teams to inform high value solution development/improvements and intuitive, seamless workflow design.
Collaborate among quality management and product offerings teams to ensure quality and safety of solutions.
Execute Client Opportunity:
Provide broad ethnographic expertise for key customer engagements during use-case definition and solution design and implementation.
Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills:
Extensive knowledge of patient care, care processes and care delivery with previous work carrying out ethnographic studies in clinical medical settings.
Extensive and broad knowledge of medical ethnography methods, developments and trends
Understanding of clinical research design and concepts
Ability to search, understand, and synthesize/summarize the existing scientific literature in support of publication development
Proven critical thinking and analytical skills
Strong collaboration and teaming skills
Strong medical writing skill
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
MS or PhD in anthropology, psychology, sociology or closely related field (with a focus on ethnography and ethnographic analysis)
Specific training in medical anthropology/ethnography would be preferred
Two or more years in applied clinical ethnography, with a broad understanding of major issues that require ethnographic assessment in health IT implementations and the nature of industry workflow
Two or more years of experience working in health care industry in a variety of roles
Three or more years of academic or industrial experience in clinical research, with a focus on study design, implementation, and subsequent publication-preferably involving ethnographic methodology.
Preferred Tech and Prof Experience
At least 5 years’ experience working in a healthcare company in a variety of roles
