The Medical Natural Language Processing (NLP) & Clinical Decision Support (CDS) Informatician will provide technical, informatics, and evaluative leadership in the design, development, and execution of both formative and summative research for Watson for Oncology (WFO), focusing on the system’s NLP and text mining capabilities. This professional will work under the supervision of the VP and Director of the Watson Health “Evaluation Research Center.” The professional will also collaborate closely with the Center’s other team members to design and implement rigorous research studies that will either influence further product development in response to insights gained or produce results suitable for analysis, summarization, and publication in top tier clinical and informatics journals.
The multidisciplinary skills and experiences required will involve knowledge of patient care and care delivery, medical record systems, medical language, literature sources, previous work in medical natural language research and its application as well as previous work in evaluation study design, implementation, and analysis regarding NLP technology clinical decision support technology. This professional will engage with key internal stakeholders and external experts, institutions and organizations to inform the quality of the Center's research and resulting publications. He/she will help to develop the essential research and client partnerships required to execute the agenda, especially those studies to be carried out in naturalistic (real world) clinical settings.
The role also includes helping to address research questions and concerns of WFO research partners and collaborators, particularly when those questions or concerns relate to the system’s NLP or CDS capabilities. This professional will participate with the Center's study leaders in producing high quality manuscripts, abstracts and presentations that involve the Center's research. He/she will support compliance with accrediting and certifying bodies and federal, state and local agencies on medical consent, IRB requirements, and ethical requirements in the rigorous, unbiased conduct of research and dissemination of results.
This Informatician has responsibilities in three overarching areas:
Provide NLP, text mining and informatics expertise and leadership in study design and evaluation methods to advance the excellence and impact of the Center's research on product quality and outcomes
Lead or support the development of essential internal and external partnerships and collaborations as required to execute the Center’s NLP evaluation research agenda
Lead or support the creation of high quality manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations that describe the Center’s research in leading peer reviewed informatics or clinical publications, at conferences, or in other forums
Coordinate with the technical development teams on implications of formative studies that suggest the need for adjustments to the underlying NLP or decision-support technology or its interaction with users
Develop Product Insights:
Provide broad and strategic informatics expertise to offering management and innovation teams to inform high value solution development/improvements and intuitive, seamless workflow design.
Collaborate among quality management and product offerings teams to ensure quality and safety of solutions.
Execute Client Opportunity:
Provide broad informatics expertise for key customer engagements during use-case definition and solution design and implementation.
Facilitate opportunities of collaborations by brokering trust and understanding among key industry stakeholders
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
Doctoral training in biomedical informatics or closely related field
Two or more years in applied medical NLP and clinical informatics, with a broad understanding of major trends regarding NLP in health IT and the nature of industry workflow
Three or more years of academic or health industrial experience in clinical research, with a focus in study design, implementation, and subsequent publication-preferably involving NLP and decision support methodology.
Experience in informing the design and development of innovative healthcare (ideally oncology) solutions using technology, data, and new models of care
Strong leadership, team building and people skills
Leader, visionary, consensus builder, innovative, effective, ethical
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
Preferred Tech and Prof Experience
MD or DO not required but would be preferred
At least 5 years' experience working in a healthcare company in a variety of roles
