Prepares and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Inputs information into the LIS. Maintains equipment and prepares special stains and immunostains. Files surgical pathology blocks and slides. Has a working comprehension of the technical and procedural aspects of histopathology. Comprehends and follows procedure guidelines. Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action. Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to other laboratory personnel.


1. Prepares Tissue Specimens for Processing

1.1. Adheres to the procedure manual for proper handling of specimens, and quality results in other situations.

1.2. Cooperates with office personnel to insure reports are distrubuted in a timely fashion.

1.3. Daily checks to insure proper program is being used to process specimens.

1.4. Daily sets up water bath with distilled water.

1.5. Removes processed tissue from tissue processor and embed in hot paraffin using the proper orientation for the tissue.

1.6. Consistently cut paraffin blocks 4 and 5 microns and mount tissue on glass slide. Skilled in adjusting cutting angle of knife.

1.7. Stains, coverslips and labels all glass slides for viewing of tissue under the microscope. Skilled in the use of the automatic stainer and coverslipper.

1.8. Sorts blocks numerically daily.

1.9. Displays ability to identify any mislabeling of blocks.

1.10. Reports any and all discrepancies to supervisor promptly.

1.11. Files blocks in appropriate filing cabinet.

1.12. Files micro slides in appropriate filing cabinet.

1.13. Verifies blocks against embedding log. Resolves any discrepancies.

1.14. Compiles, checks and edits embedding log.

2. Special and Immunohistochemistry Staining

2.1. Maintains log of specimens to be decaled. Checks each bone specimen for level of decalcification. Wash in water and place in container for processing.

2.2. Checks request book daily for other than routine stains ordered.

2.3. Perform special stains and immunostains with excellent results.

2.4. Insure procedure to be used is in compliance with pathologist request.

2.5. Enters special stains and immunostains into the CoPath computer.

2.6. Displays ability to modify and/or change staining procedures as necessary. Relates all changes to the supervisor for approval.

2.7. Obtains and test specimens to be used as positive controls.

2.8. Enters orders and verifies special stains and immuno stains.

2.9. Enters controls, special stains and immunostains on surgical, autopsy and consult cases.

2.10. Chooses appropriate workgroup when entering special stains.

2.11. Prints logs and labels.

2.12. Files logs in appropriate notebooks.

3. Equipment Maintenance

3.1. Daily rids microtome of paraffin by cleaning exterior with an antiseptic solution.

3.2. Always adheres to procedure manual for time intervals for lubricating microtome.

3.3. Maintains log of routine maintenance on automatic slide stainer, rotary microtome, embedding stations, coverslipper, and other instruments used in histology.

3.4. Cleans out retort of tissue processor daily after cleaning cycle.

3.5. Maintains good cutting edge on knives by honing and/or stropping daily or as needed.

3.6. Always checks and records temperatures of water baths, ovens, paraffin dispenser, paraffin pitcher, refrigerators, and embedding stations.

3.7. Adheres to prescribed safety practices and procedures.

3.8. Reviews all written policies yearly.

4. Related Responsibilities

4.1. Assist in cutting room as needed.

4.2. Enters frozen sections into CoPath.

4.3. Accessions surgical pathology specimens as needed.

4.4. Assist office personnel in locating slides, pulling blocks, etc.

4.5. Records date recieved and date opened on reagents.

4.6. Demonstrates comprehension of the technical and procedural aspects of histopathology.

4.7. Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction, and takes appropriate action.

4.8. Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to other laboratory personnel.

4.9. Assist with specimen projects as requested.

4.10. Carries out assigned tasks in an efficient manner, uses time well, and seeks additional work to utilize free time.

4.11. Willingly carries out additional assignments as required.

4.12. Recognizes the scope of responsibilities and functions within the limitation of the job description and organization structure.

4.13. Responds in a positive manner to constructive criticism.

5.5. Participates in helping department reorganize and maintain a healthy working environment for fellow employees.

Other information:


High school deploma and completion of two years of clinical laboratory experience in histopathology OR completion of an accredited histotechnology (2 year) program OR associates degree and one year histopathology experience. ASCP certification (HT) required.


One to two years experience as Histotechnician preferred.


ASCP (HT) required unless grandfathered into position.


Extreme manual dexterity required. Excellent attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, technical, communication and organization skills required. Comprehends and follows procedural guidelines. Recognizes unexpected results and takes appropriate action.


This position requires multiple manual transfer of accession numbers in order to maintain the patient identification. Transposition of numbers could result in erroneous diagnoses and inappropriate medical care/treatment.


The technical skill in floating 4 micron tissue embedded paraffin ribbons onto glass slides and preserving specimen integrity through many dehydration and hydration processes represents the greatest challenge for this position. Specimen samples are often extremely small and cannot be replaced if the tissue is denatured inappropriately. Processes are highly manual.


Position requires steady hands and excellent dexterity. Extended hours sitting at a microtome are required.
