The Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation (MMRF) has a current opening for a full-time Research Assistant to support the research of Dr. Jason Baker being conducted in Hennepin County Medical Center's (HCMC) Infectious Disease department.  Experience working in HIV is highly desirable, as is experience working in clinical and laboratory setting.\r
POSITION SUMMARY:            \r
Perform phlebotomies. Process blood and urine specimens.  Perform specimen processing\/storage\/shipping functions. Perform data entry and computer maintenance tasks.  Maintain adequate supplies. Maintain specimen repository. Assist research staff with projects.  Will conduct research study visits, including all protocol directed visit procedures and data collection, for select projects.\r
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: \r
Perform phlebotomy.\r
Process blood and urine specimens.\r
\r
Coordinate specimen collection and further processing (e.g., PBMC) with team members\r
Process blood and other body fluid (e.g., urine) specimens on site, including centrifuging, aliquoting and storing specimens in freezer or liquid nitrogen as specified\r
Measure and record specimen volumes, and catalog specimen inventory.\r

Perform specimen shipping\/receiving functions.\r
\r
Package and transport (via courier or shipping) specimens to collaborating groups\r
Accept and ship specimens to collaborators\r
\r
Maintain oversight of an internal specimen bio-repository (freezer and LN tank)\r
\r
Catalog specimens, including tracking and pulling for shipping\r
Develop and improve organizational and tracking processes for bio-repository.\r
Perform routine electronic check on refrigerator\/freezer temperature systems\r
\r
Maintain adequate supplies and laboratory facilities.\r
\r
Maintain an inventory of and order supplies as needed (e.g., Purchases & Expenses log)\r
Unpack laboratory supplies and mark all items with the date received. .\r
Organize and clean laboratory storeroom\r
Upkeep of equipment (e.g., liquid nitrogen supply)\r
Perform weekly eyewash checks\r
Perform computer maintenance tasks.\r
\r
Assist with and conduct study visit procedures and other protocol directed tasks \r
\r
Create study visits kits and binders\r
Maintain and order kit supplies as appropriate.\r
Assist with completion of CRFs and data entry into the study database.\r
Conduct or assist with study visit procedures and data collection as needed\r
Laboratory result evaluation (i.e., grading abnormalities) and entry into the HER\r
Maintain accurate and timely study records, including reconciling data queries.\r
Be responsive to study sponsors and\/or monitors and maintain quality assurance during study conduct\r
Become familiar and skilled with necessary software, including but not limited to, EPIC, REDCap, and any programs\/software used by study sponsors\r

NON ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:\r

Prepare and maintain documents on local laboratory processes and procedures\r
Prepare various general laboratory preventive maintenance procedures\r
\r
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:\r
Education\/Experience:\r
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be completion of two (2) years of post-high school education and two (2) years' experience in a related area and\/or in research.  Bachelor's degree preferred, as is experience in conducting clinical research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. A Phlebotomy certificate and one (1) year related phlebotomy and\/or laboratory experience in a medical and\/or research setting is preferred. \r
Skill, Knowledge & Ability:\r
Requires interaction with a diverse population.  Knowledge of medical terminology, the collection and processing of lab specimens, and clinical laboratory procedures, techniques, and standards.  Must have the ability to follow standard operating procedures and techniques for a medical laboratory when performing tests. Ability to work with minimal supervision and be highly organized and efficient. Possess good manual dexterity to handle specimens.  Ability to maintain strict adherence to research protocols.  Must maintain appropriate training\/certification as required by varied research protocols. Must have knowledge of proper telephone etiquette and be responsive to customer needs.  Demonstrated knowledge of PC's and software applications.  Displays high standards of attendance and punctuality.  Previous data entry experience and Hazmat certification preferred.\r
