The study of efficacy, benefits, risks and other effects of a medical product is called Clinical Research. Before a medicine is released in the market, clinical research is carried out.

In order to start a career in clinical research, you are required to possess certain attributes. You should fulfill minimum eligibility criteria. A Science Graduate from bioscience, life science, medicine or pharmacy is usually sought after by the industries. Biology includes various sub-branches like genetics, biochemistry, zoology and botany.

To start a career in clinical research, you can have entry level in various categories. One is a Clinical Research Associate or CRA termed in abbreviated form, Biostatistician, Clinical Research Manager etc. A CRA is the person who plays a key role in planning, designing, implementing and monitoring of clinical trials. He also assists in the preparation of manuscripts of scientific meetings and other documentations relating to clinical studies. Clinical Research Associate plays an important role in overseeing the progress of clinical trials generally conducted by physicians at hospitals, clinics or research foundations.


A Clinical Research Assistant is required to demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills. He must be well versed in preparing protocols, draft reports procedures and reports and present them in conferences and meetings. A person who facilitates in planning, designing, implementing and reviewing the research data created in clinical studies is a Clinical Research Assistant.

As per the latest data available, in United States a medical research assistant gets a median salary of $32,139 per annum. Annual median salary for a clinical research associate is $51,666 whereas a senior Clinical research associate receives an annual salary of $80,573.

To start a career in Clinical Research, it requires a Bachelor's degree in Science with 6 months to 2 years practical clinical experience. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Registered Nurse program also makes you eligible to step into the field of clinical research. Experience is not a necessary pre-requisite for a person having a Ph.D., Pharm.D or M.D. A Master's Degree enhances the career prospects of CRA to become a Project Manager. Acquiring a PhD enhances your prospects of becoming a Medical Director.

A career in the Clinical Research field is quite bright in the future. Various colleges offer diplomas and degrees at PG level courses which enhance the career prospects further. A Ph.D. is for those who are seriously interested in doing research work. Clinical Research Associates have the opportunity to work with sponsor firms and internal personnel involved in clinical trials including other Crass, Quality Assurance, Statisticians, Regulatory Affairs, Data Management, Medical Writers, Clinical Study Managers and Drug Safety. A CRA has the opportunity to interact with external parties from Research Organizations on Contract, Study Site Staff like a Study Coordinator & Investigator, Hospital Pharmacy Department, and the FDA.
